My youngest got sprung from school a few days early because of a teacher’s strike, and this afternoon we found ourselves down here with this guy. See him? Top left corner?
He didn’t look quite so blurry in real life, and although he looks a million miles off he was actually close enough to peek down my top.
He was interested in bay happenings and spent the afternoon moving around it, flying right over us and parking in various trees. As we got ready to go he took off in the air again. I asked my daughter if she could imagine how amazing it would be if he landed on the beach beside us. Amazing in a terrifying way perhaps. “I wish he would come,” I said, and then he seemed like he was heading towards us. “He’s coming,” she said. Yikes. But he paused over the water then swooped down with his claws outstretched and we think picked up a small fish. Whew. Fish on the menu tonight, not bits of us or any of the merganser chicks that swam past earlier. If he didn’t actually snag a fish he was putting on a good show and we thank him for that.
An afternoon of laughing with the young one, eagle company, beach yoga and workout moves, and a small sketch of some mussels I was smitten with. Mussel crush. There were two barnacles crushing on it too.
