When I designed this canvas I just thought I’d do some swirly circles but as I worked on it it started to look like sushi to me. \u00a0I’m not sure if sushi is popular everywhere or not but in Vancouver it’s a toss up whether there are more sushi places or Starbucks, and it’s hard to walk down a street without tripping over one or the other.<\/p>\n

One of my favourite things is when the opportunity comes up to take one of my kids for sushi and have some one on one time. \u00a0Such a nice time for chatting and catching up.\u00a0Occasionally when there’s been something touchy to talk about I’ve taken the sushi route so that we’d be in a good mood filling our bellies with spicy tuna rolls, and agadashi tofu. \u00a0Yum. \u00a0Bit hard to get grumpy with each other in the midst of that.<\/p>\n

Last week I had an absolutely delightful sushi feed with my middle one, who’s making some plans for travelling and was feeling expansive, chatty and happy. \u00a0We talked documentaries, amongst other things. \u00a0How cool is that? \u00a0I love these interesting creatures my kids have grown into. \u00a0(Not that they weren’t wonderfully interesting when they were little too. \u00a0You get some great stuff out of those little ones for sure.)<\/p>\n

A friend asked me to send him a picture of dinner. \u00a0A masochist obviously. \u00a0I remembered a little too late. \u00a0Think we enjoyed it? \u00a0Except for the pickled ginger, which we both scorn and turn our noses up at, there was nothing but a grain of rice or two left behind.<\/p>\n

\"ImageMy youngest spent a day in my office with me a few weeks ago for the Take Your Kid to Work Day through school. \u00a0At first I thought she’d be bored, I spend so much of my time painting canvases still and she wouldn’t be able to do that, but I started a list of other possibilities and it grew into quite a fun mix. \u00a0She was such a help, and did so many finicky little things I just don’t get time for, like organizing computer files and setting up systems and such. \u00a0Her elastic mind took care of all that stuff easily. \u00a0It was fun having her hang out there.<\/p>\n

Guess where I took her to thank her.<\/p>\n

(As an aside, I took Scouty to Take Your Cat to Work Day. \u00a0Her project was to imitate the needlepoint cushions. \u00a0I think she did a pretty good job! Maybe a bit more relaxed than the original.)<\/p>\n

So show me a sushi pillow and that’s the wandering path my mind takes. \u00a0I have a small confession. \u00a0I set the pillow on my chair, draped a yummy charcoal sweater behind, took a picture and transferred it onto my computer, thought I was pretty good at this, got it into the blog, looks pretty good, gave myself a little pat on the back\u2026 hey. Hey. \u00a0Not the right way up. \u00a0Oops.<\/p>\n

I can live with it. \u00a0Maybe it will increase the elasticity of my own mind. \u00a0Might get over it with a bit of sushi.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
