This is what I look out at when I’m working at my desk.  Pretty lucky.  At times I can see big splashes from a seal goofing around, maybe playing with a meal.  Other times a big group of dolphins swim past.  This is a recent development in my part of the Sound and I can never believe I’m sitting at my desk watching dolphins playing and jumping out of the water.  I’ve thought about painting them or designing a canvas but they seem to be like sunsets.  Pretty tough to work on without going into cliches, kitsch, or garishness!

‘Garishness’ is actually a real word.  Getting tough to make up my own words when they’re ahead of me with ones like that.

Sometimes in the summer I get up early to work and enjoy the peace of the morning.  One of the best features of my amazing office is that it sort of has an ejection feature.  Mid afternoon the sun comes around and beats in so that working becomes an uncomfortable yucky mix of squinting and sweating.  At that time you can look out and if there are sparkles on the water you know it’s a perfect day for swimming.  Or ‘field research’ as I like to call it.  ‘Brainstorming’ while I run and fall into the water. ‘Logistical planning’ while drying off on a beach towel, toes dug in the sand.  Sigh.  Almost here.
